'Brazil,'' a German-language short by the Georgian director Giga Chkheidze that practices its own brand of enigmatic deadpan wit. Using line drawings and sample phrases from a foreign-language textbook, Mr. Chkheidze cobbles together the story of an expatriate German family on a tour of their homeland, a story with curious overtones of melodrama, sex farce and film noir. It's a bracingly odd piece of work; I laughed throughout it, without ever knowing quite why.

Death brings together absolute different people in abnormal circumstances and at the same time it separates them to finally estrange them from each other altogether. The way these people behave only underlines the great absurdity and tragedy of war.

All that can be mentioned are moments within larger, formalized films. Today however experimentalism is back. Young Georgian director Giga Chkheidze is in the vanguard. He started to create independent films in 1991. From 1993, he worked on indie-productions in Moscow, Munich, Berlin and London. Currently he lives in Germany, although occasionally

works in Georgia. The short film ‘Brazil’ was his first German production. This illustrates a German lesson – set around the Karl Plaza, National Theatre and German Museum. The movie starts with a black screen set against voices wishing to visit the sites. However the cultural institutions turn out not to be the ones we see later. Munich in fact transforms into the micro model of the world. We see flashes of people but don’t see the sites. People appear on moving staircases with their backs to us, interchanged with others in screen-saver mode. At first sight the movie appears to be aimed at the foreign audience, ie people who do not

speak German. This has an alienating effect on German speakers. It is alienation not only from language but also from the city itself. That explains the title of the film - ‘Brazil‘ – which is in fact about Munich. The director returns us to the world of childhood experimentation – a time when we craved new knowledge. This refers to a nostalgia for something formative, without a name, neither Brazil not Munich. In one episode, rhythmic movement on a subway staircase is juxtaposed with the sound of words -like futuristic poetry. By dissolving the meaning of words the director defies literal interpretation. Such an approach is developed in his later films - ‘Lake’ (2002) and ’Eva’ (2004). In these Giga Chkheidze plays not only with words but also foregrounds. In his latest work ‘Sunny Week’ (2005) he observes the exact same place for an entire week. He explores the effects of light and shade on water, it’s bottom and surface. By changing the lightning, he moves up and down and vice versa – a strikingly picturesque effect. The ‘Sunny Weak’ is reminiscent to the work of Kiki Smith. In ‘Eve’ we see talking woman. The image is blurred despite a long monologue. Only the landscape behind her is in focus, and the voice of the actress is overlaid with Debussy. This kind of overplay splits the frame and the image of the woman becomes the background for a graphic landscape. Giga Chkheidze’s work has been shown at many festivals – including the Oberhausen Festival for Short Films, Rotterdam, San Sebastian and Texas International Festivals. His movies have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) Anthology Film Archives NY and in the Lincoln Centre Film Society (NYC). His works ‘Khorumi’, ‘Sunflower and March’, ‘Fin’ are included in the Tbilisi 7th International Film festival in October 10-15, 2006 in Tbilisi.

Georgian feature project "Washington" has won the Hubert Bals Fund Award at the Yerevan film festival co-production forum in Armenia. Helmers Andro Sakvarelidze and Giga Chkheidze carry off Euros 5,000 ($8,000) from the fund, part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. "Washington" sees the world through the eyes of a 10-year old boy from Georgia, whose fantasies, inspired by the image on a dollar bill, show that money brings identical troubles the world over. Project was selected from 12 in the second DAB Co-Production Forum, which brings together professionals from across the Caucasus and neighboring countries.

THE NEW FILM "A MAN AND A WOMAN"

The first collaboration between Sigrun Höllrigl und George Chkheidze became alive by finishing the film poem "a man and a woman" in August 2015. The short film of 9:36 minutes is based on one single shot. The text is a poem of Sigrun Höllrigl, which gets newly interpretated in the film. In the work the artists wonder, how we can face human reality better, by telling a tragedy or a comedy.

The international premiere will be in Athens during the "International Film Poetry Festival". The Austrian premiere will take place at the Art Visuals & Poetry Filmfestivals December, 5-6 in Vienna. After that the film goes into festival distribution.
